The Department of Tourism (DOT) reported that the country has surpassed its full-year target for international tourist arrivals. It has reached 4,822,530 visitors, surpassing the 4.8 million goal for 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Foreign tourists constitute 91.9% of the arrivals. South Korea was the top source of tourist, contributing 26.4% of the total arrivals. Other significant sources include the United States, Japan, China, and Australia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The DOT attributes the increased arrivals to liberalized visa policies, the development of tourist rest areas, and various initiatives. The country’s position as Asia’s leading diving destination for the fifth consecutive year was also highlighted. The DOT has also initiated a campaign promoting the Philippines as a golf tourism destination, emphasizing the country’s over 100 golf courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our View: <\/strong>Despite the country’s success in surpassing its 2023 tourism target, the full potential is hindered by the ongoing weakness in the economies of some of our main tourist sources. The Philippines is still way below its pre-pandemic share of tourism to GDP, which stood at 12%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A notable gap in this recovery is the absence of Chinese tourists and this can be attributed to the persisting economic challenges faced by China. Tourism’s economic impact extends across various sectors, including leisure, airlines, and gaming industries, as it generates revenue from expenditures on accommodations, transportation, food, and diverse services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The tourism sector is undeniably a linchpin of the Philippine economy, not only contributing substantially to the GDP but also serving as a significant source of employment and livelihood for millions of Filipinos. To fully capitalize on the sector’s potential, addressing the Chinese tourist market and bolstering economic ties with China could be pivotal for sustained and comprehensive tourism growth in the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
