Over the past five months, inflation has gradually eased to 5.4% as of June, thanks in part to the efforts of the competent economic managers whom Marcos has appointed to handle the situation.

However, there are limitations on what economic managers can control, given that several factors influencing inflation are beyond the nation’s immediate control and have external origins. This recognition highlights the complexity of the issue and the need for a multifaceted approach to address the root causes of inflation.

One of the significant external challenges that looms over the Philippines is the El Niño Phenomenon, coinciding with record global temperatures. This poses a substantial threat to the country’s vulnerability to climate-induced price shocks.

Additionally, the world is grappling with price pressures as numerous commodity prices remain elevated. Rice and sugar, for example, are trading at multi-year highs, while wheat prices surged following Russia’s termination of a grain deal with Ukraine earlier this month. Given that rice is the country’s main staple and holds the highest share in the food Consumer Price Index (CPI) basket in Asia, at around 25%, the Philippines is particularly sensitive to fluctuations in rice prices.

A recent announcement by India, which accounts for 40% of world rice exports, banning rice exports is projected to further inflate rice and other food product prices globally. Moreover, China, a major rice producer, has also faced challenges due to unfavorable weather conditions, potentially exacerbating price pressures. Compounding the situation, there has been a recent jump in crude oil prices, reaching three-month highs, as supply cuts have led to shrinking oil inventories.

Our View: The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is correct in acknowledging that inflation remains a pressing concern, and it would be premature to assume that the economy is entirely out of the woods. While headline inflation appears to be on a downward trajectory, it’s crucial to recognize that this could be primarily due to base effects factors affecting the year-on-year comparison.

The recent month of June, which witnessed inflation reaching its lowest level in 15 months, also saw the first sequential increase. This development signals the possibility of a near-term trend that could pose challenges in achieving the BSP’s target range of 2 to 4% inflation. Given the uncertain inflation outlook, the BSP’s cautious approach is warranted. Monetary managers are justified in stating that rate cuts are not currently feasible and cannot be merely employed as a tactic of moral suasion.

With inflation still being a concern, the BSP needs to exercise prudence in its monetary policy decisions to strike a balance between supporting economic growth and containing inflationary pressures. Moreover, there is also the need to be in step with the monetary actions of the Fed, as this could impact the local currency.

This report is prepared by PinoyInvestor’s partner broker below.
