Our Partner Broker’s Macro-Economic Analysis

US President Donald Trump’s trade policies could dash the hopes of emerging Asian economies seeking to emulate China’s early development. Signs that Trump is embarking on an era of American protectionism by bringing back jobs to the US increases threats across Southeast Asia.

The Philippines and Vietnam stand to lose the most in Southeast Asia if trade with US drops.

Philippines’ exports to the US accounts for about 13% of its total exports, while Vietnam is about 21% or so.

The two countries are among the biggest compared to the likes of Singapore (8%), Indonesia (11%), Thailand (11%), and Malaysia (12%).
