Market Issue or Event

Data from the Department of Tourism (DOT) showed foreign visitors rising by 7.2% to 6.4 Million from Jan-Nov 2018, mainly due to the 30% growth in Chinese tourists, which reached 1.16 Million or 18% of the total visitors to the Philippines.

Our Partner Broker’s View and Commentary

We note that the continuous influx of Chinese people would benefit a number of industries like:

1) Gaming – as this would also mirror the growth of the VIP segment of Casinos;

2) Properties – since the continuous arrival of Chinese tourists would continue to spark the demand for office (POGO) and residential spaces; and

3) Retail – as these Chinese tourists are also seen to drive consumer demand especially for premium goods and ready to eat products.

Given these, we are of preference to the following stocks: Bloomberry Resorts Corp. (BLOOM), Megaworld Properties (MEG), SM Prime Holdings (SMPH), Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc. (RRHI), and SSI Group Inc. (SSI).
